Chords, rhythms and form — a recipe and a history
About the event
Musicologist Anna Vilenskaja broke jazz down into its essential elements: chords, rhythm, form and improvisation. The lecture helped listeners hear what musicians are actually doing on stage, how jazz styles differ and how freedom can emerge from highly precise rules.
Vilenskaja also explored the physical nature of jazz, its roots in African traditions and the aura of mystery and difficulty that still surrounds the music. The evening welcomed both experienced listeners and anyone who had previously thought, “I don’t understand jazz.”
